24th August 2008 New Zealand Adventure Update
Hi.
Well a few days since I last updated, but things have slowed a pace as we wait to move into our new home. Oh so close to moving now :-))
Sunday we decided to head over to…….
Well ok none of them today, BUT this is the great thing about living here in Cromwell. We are pretty much centrally located and traveling around to these places is very easy.
SO………. we decided to wander on over to Wanka again as James has not been with us on the first visit and he wanted to take a look.
This is a main street looking down towards the lake.
And another view a bit closer.
This next shot simply turn left and looks along what is the main street that runs alongside the lake. Some nice cafes and bars along here, very trendy place with lots of snowboarders about.
If you sit a while and count them, about every 50 or so what walk past are either limping or in some sort of physical discomfort. MMMmmm I think I had a lucky escape from my lesson that day. BUT I WILL return for a lesson, I promise.
Next a view out to the lake.
And another one closer up.
We stayed in Wanaka most of the morning and then had a call from Steven (Our eldest son) who is living in Queenstown. We agreed to meet up in Cromwell in a couple of hours.
This next picture was taking back in Cromwell down near the old part of the town.
The just a lazy stroll to look at some of the older town, that is now only open to those on foot.
The above has been kept or restored to pretty much how it would have been during the early settler days. In one of the buildings you can drop a dollar into a slot and listen to a recording of how life was in those days.
One has to admire the people from all over the world that simply packed up and headed for the newly discovered opportunities in this strange new country. Many simply burned their bridges, and it was do or die. These were surely GREAT adventurers.
In many ways in can be quite humbling to realise what little many of them had and what hardships they had to endure to make what was the life changing journey to the other side of the world. In most cases the decisions to “GO” were based on “wonderful stories” that filtered back to their homelands, that had little substance of the reality found once they landed.
Well thats all for now
Catch up with you real soon.
Martin
